One of the main contributions of forensic dentistry is its application for age assessment specifically of age of majority. Minimum age of Criminal Responsibility is stablished in most of the world as 18 years old and is also the threshold to discriminate an adult from a minor. The third molar has been used as the main age indicator of adult age due to its span of development and to the small influence received by environmental factors such as nutrition, socioeconomic background and systemic factors. Due to all these advantages the group of AgEstimation project has focus its efforts in developing a quantitative method that allows to discriminate adults from minors using the third molar index I3M, based on the measurements of the third molar developing apex and the length of this tooth in a panoramic radiographic image . The method has been tested successfully in samples coming from different countries. However, an issue remained, since most of the individuals in which the forensic age assessment is done belong to populations from which studies that reference that specifics populations are not available, could this index be used on them? Do differences between various ethnic groups in third molar development and specifically in the way I3M assess 18 years old limit its application in members of ethnic groups outside the reference population studied? Although separate results of the multiples studies already done suggested that I3M could be reliable in discriminating minors from adults independently of ethnicity, the work of this thesis aimed to test this hypothesis.

Abstract
Although separate results of the multiples studies already done suggested that I3M could be reliable in discriminating minors from adults independently of ethnicity, the work of this thesis aimed to test this hypothesis.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
