The present thesis work was carried out beginning with the transcription of the unpublished materials of the correspondence between Carlo Bo and Carlo Betocchi, dated between 1934 and 1985. The letters of Betocchi, together with some of the family members, are currently conserved in the Archives of the “Carlo and Marise Bo” Foundation for the Modern and Contemporary European Literature of Urbino; we added to our initial work some letters, drafts and letterpress of the poet, which can be found at the Contemporary Archive “Alessandro Bonsanti” of the Scientific-Literary Cabinet «G. P. Vieusseux» of Florence, where the letters of Bo are also collected. The thesis is bipartite: the first part is a critical review, the second part consists of the transcription of the correspondence, a chronologically extended corpus of reasonable size, which also allows to touch many critical points of the Italian and European twentieth century literature. The first chapter investigates what the letter is (what it conveys through its structure) and what are the forms of epistolary writing; the second has been conceived as a report on the development of the correspondence and on the evolution over the years of the relationship between the two authors. In a time during which the letter was still “the” communication mean (or at least one of the few communication tools in absentia) the correspondence between Bo and Betocchi addresses the evolution of the Italian (and European) literary and cultural situation from the 1930s to the eighties. Chapters three and the four allow us to reconstruct the figures of Bo and Betocchi through this «very useful correspondence» . The analysis of the poetic work of Betocchi, and the role of Bo in the cultural panorama of the time, show how they have devoted themselves completely to their work, without ever renouncing the search for a truth «intangible and nevertheless necessary» . The fifth chapter, finally, is dedicated to the interaction of Bo and Betocchi through literary magazines and addresses the main editorial collaborations of the two authors: first, the «Frontespizio», where the friendship between Bo and Betocchi was born and that represented a time «at the dawn of every possible thing» ; second, after the Second World War, the two-year project of the «Chimera», published in the years 1954-1955; last, from 1958 to 1978, the twenty years characterized by the long multimedia experience of radio, newspapers and television «Approdo». The conclusions highlight how the epistolary theory is adapted from time to time to the letters examined. In fact, the correspondence of Bo-Betocchi bears witness to a conception of literature, and therefore of writing, which has the search for truth as its first duty. The analysis of the documents shows how the correspondence is an integral part of the work of the two authors, moreover such correspondence is used as an indispensable tool for investigating existence. The second part of the thesis consists of the transcription of the correspondence, sorted chronologically by year and divided into chapters: it is accompanied by an initial note to the text, the necessary numbered table of contents (including that of the original manuscripts and typescripts) and a final Appendix in which the undated letters, the letters of Betocchi’s relatives and the extra-textual materials attached to the correspondence are gathered. Due to the amount of material (480 different documents), the work of decoding and transcription required a careful and long analysis based on the principles of philology: I respected the content of the letter as much as possible. Moreover, I tried to provide a critical transcription as close as possible to the original, adding at the bottom of page a double philological and explanatory-exegetical apparatus. The intimate and, at the same time, socially, rhetorically and codified form of epistolary writing has allowed us to use a series of knowledge and skills related to philology, literature, literary theory and history. Even if the transcription of a correspondence never makes the curator an ‘expert in literature’, it certainly allows him to prepare against what Bo and Betocchi have always averted: «the always easy and deadly dangers of aestheticism and of sentimentality, of calligraphy and of intellectual complacency, in short, against all forms, more or less refined, which can assume our insincerity» .
Il presente lavoro di tesi è stato svolto a partire dalla trascrizione dei materiali inediti del carteggio fra Carlo Bo e Carlo Betocchi, databile fra il 1934 e il 1985. Le lettere di Betocchi, insieme ad alcune dei familiari, sono attualmente conservate presso l’Archivio della Fondazione Carlo e Marise Bo per la Letteratura Europea Moderna e Contemporanea di Urbino; a queste sono state aggiunte, nello studio, alcune missive, minute e copialettere del poeta, custodite presso l’Archivio Contemporaneo «Alessandro Bonsanti» del Gabinetto Scientifico-Letterario «G. P. Vieusseux» di Firenze, dove sono raccolte anche le lettere di Bo. La tesi è strutturata in maniera bipartita, con una prima parte critica e una seconda costituita dalla trascrizione del carteggio, un corpus cronologicamente esteso e quantitativamente rilevante che ha permesso di affrontare diversi punti nodali della letteratura italiana ed europea del Novecento. Mentre il capitolo primo si propone di sondare che cosa sia la lettera nella sua struttura di senso e quali siano forme e modi della scrittura epistolare, il secondo è stato pensato come un resoconto sullo svolgimento del carteggio e sull’evoluzione, negli anni, del rapporto fra i due corrispondenti. In un’epoca in cui la lettera era ancora l’unico, o comunque uno dei pochi, strumenti di comunicazione in absentia, il carteggio fra Bo e Betocchi affronta l’evolversi della situazione letteraria e culturale italiana (ed europea) dagli anni Trenta agli anni Ottanta. Il capitolo terzo e il quarto intendono ricostruire le figure di Bo e Betocchi attraverso questa «corrispondenza utilissima» . L’analisi dell’opera poetica dell’uno, e il ruolo dell’altro nel panorama culturale dell’epoca, vogliono mostrare come essi si siano dedicati completamente al lavoro, senza mai rinunciare alla ricerca di una «verità intangibile» e ‘nondimeno necessaria’ . Il quinto capitolo, infine, è dedicato alla stagione delle riviste letterarie e affronta le principali collaborazioni redazionali dei due corrispondenti: in primis, il «Frontespizio», all’interno del quale è nata l’amicizia fra Bo e Betocchi e che ha rappresentato una stagione «all’alba di ogni cosa possibile» ; nel secondo dopoguerra, il progetto biennale della «Chimera», pubblicata negli anni 1954-1955; dal 1958 al 1978, il ventennio caratterizzato dalla lunga esperienza multimediale dell’«Approdo» radiofonico, cartaceo e televisivo. Le conclusioni, dunque, mettono in luce come la teoria dell’epistolarità venga di volta in volta adattata alle corrispondenze prese in esame. Il carteggio Bo-Betocchi, infatti, rende testimonianza di una concezione di letteratura, e quindi di scrittura, che assume come primo dovere la ricerca della verità. L’analisi dei documenti dimostra come l’epistolarità faccia parte integrante dell’opera dei due corrispondenti e sia per loro uno strumento irrinunciabile di indagine sull’esistenza. La seconda parte della tesi è costituita dalla trascrizione dei documenti, ordinati cronologicamente per anno e suddivisi in capitoli: essa è corredata da un’iniziale nota al testo, dai necessari elenchi, compreso quello degli originali manoscritti e dattiloscritti, e da un’Appendice finale in cui sono riunite le lettere non datate, le lettere dei familiari di Betocchi e i materiali extratestuali allegati al carteggio. Trattandosi di circa 480 unità documentarie, il lavoro di decodifica e trascrizione ha richiesto un’attenta e lunga analisi basata sui principi della filologia d’autore : pur privilegiando l’aspetto contenutistico delle lettere, ho cercato di fornirne una trascrizione critica più possibile aderente all’originale, inserendo a fondo pagina un doppio apparato filologico ed esplicativo-esegetico. La forma intima e insieme socialmente, retoricamente, codificata della scrittura epistolare ha permesso l’utilizzo di una serie di conoscenze e competenze relative alla filologia, alla letteratura, alla teoria letteraria e alla storia culturale. Se poi la trascrizione di un carteggio non ha mai la pretesa di rendere il curatore un ‘esperto di letteratura’, essa di sicuro gli consente di attrezzarsi contro ciò che Bo e Betocchi hanno sempre scongiurato: «i pericoli sempre facili e mortali dell’estetismo e del sentimentalismo, della calligrafia e del compiacimento intellettuale, insomma contro tutte le forme, più o meno raffinate, che può assumere la nostra insincerità» .
