This transdisciplinary project investigates dynamics and conditions of building “public space”, challenging both concepts of “public” and of “space”. The project contributes to deepening the meaning of both public space and integration. Furthermore, it highlights the relevance of culture to improve dynamic and open public spaces. The project: a. provides an innovative analysis (based on a transdisciplinary methodology) of the relation between space, also in its physical dimension, and cultural practices. b. highlights codes of inclusion/exclusion. It challenges concepts of integration understood as reduction or mere adaption. It does not only focus on economic and social inclusion. Integration addresses issues of identity, recognition and participation from a rights-based perspective (Stone et al.). c. identifies how culture can provide conditions of possibilities and tools through which public space can arise by relying on the many meanings of culture related to the physical (i.e. monuments and artefacts), symbolic (i.e. creative process) and social dimension. Culture implies divergent thoughts, encounters between differences and openness to change: therefore spaces are needed, where people are enabled to experience living together beyond fragmentation or assimilation. Space is a powerful factor in the creation of conditions for justice or injustice (E. Soja), for social and political inclusion and new solidarity (I.M. Abstract

Cultures are always emplaced. Places are lived, represented and spaces of representation (H. Lefebvre). Young), going beyond tribal closures, homogenising universalisms or reductive integration. This perspective shares a commitment to tackle exclusion and foster individual freedom. d. proposes a case study focusing on the museum. e. proposes a document with a few indicators to evaluate public spaces on the basis of their dynamics, openness and agency in fostering integration.
