Our project focuses on the communication of certainty and uncertainty in scientific language, both written and oral, with specific reference to the biomedical field. Distinguishing certain and uncertain information in texts is of crucial importance since the communication of an information in certain or uncertain way can determinate opposite outcomes. For example, National Governments make decisions regarding their health policies on the basis of how certain or uncertain the results from biomedical research are communicated. On the same basis, the scientific community steers their own research and clinicians direct their practice. The popular scientific communication (magazines, tv, dvd, web etc.) plays a significant role in spreading scientific knowledge, in making people aware and in assuming subsequent attitudes and behaviours.
