Cyberbullying is a significant and common issue for today’s children and youth with the potential for insidious and pervasive effects that can result in lasting and sometimes deadly consequences. Cyberbullying is an emerging field of study integrating researchers from multiple disciplines, backgrounds and schools of thought representing different philosophical, theoretical and practical interests. Although research on cyberbullying is rapidly increasing around the world, the resulting body of literature is fragmented due to definitional discrepancies, atheoretical inquiry, and inconsistencies in the instruments used to measure cyberbullying. The project will introduce cyberbullying and will include discussion about the difficulties inherent in defining cyberbullying, the prevalence of cyberbullying from a global perspective, and the potential consequences of cyberbullying for victims, bullies, and witnesses. Will explore the theoretical frameworks that have been proposed or used to help explain why cyberbullying may occur (e.g., I3 theory, theory of planned behavior, etc.) and the place and importance of theory in informing future cyberbullying research. Also the methodological issues in researching cyberbullying including in-depth review and critique of existing cyberbullying instruments, a specific focus on Italian and North American instruments, and a review of psychometric characteristics important for instruments. Last, will explore recent research findings (via readings of systematic reviews and original articles) with respect to demographic differences in cyberbullying involvement by gender, age, and type of technology used as well as the potential solutions identified by these findings. Throughout the project partticular attention will be paid to cross-cultural challenges in conducting cyberbullying research.
