The paper discusses a functional approach to grammar paying special attention to German as a Foreign Language. In a first part the connection between language means and communicative purposes is illustrated employing the example of determinative compounds with identifying and characterising functions in descriptive parts of audio-guide-texts. In the second part learning activities are proposed with reference to determinative compounds and grouped according to their functional performance in an audio-guide-text. They are subsequently commented on the basis of the student’s written production. In the third and last part the role of determinative compounds in grammar workbooks is investigated and commented on in relation to their occurrence in authentic texts.
