This entry porvides an introduction to the works of a popular, though lesser known, Victorian novelist. Mrs. J. H. Riddell was well known in the 1860s and 1870s as the author of novels set in the City of London and dealing with the world of business, commerce, and finance, represented in sharply drawn realistic detail. Unusual for a woman writer, her choice of subject matter proved successful. This article presents an overview of Riddell's literary output arguing for the cultural and historical relevance of her City novels.
