Did politics, policies and political institutions play a role in the emergence and evolution of the contemporary long lasting systemic crisis Italy has been experiencing since 2008? This is the key question addressed. After arguing that the macrovariable “politics” has played and is still playing a crucial role in the genesis and persistence of the crisis, four possible innovative and unprecedented institutional adjustments are presented and discussed. In particular, the logic of these adjustments consists in reducing the weight of rhetoric, spectacularization, electoral promises, demagogy, populism, large scale free-riding, ineffectiveness of legislative bodies, unaccountability of policy makers to try to set up political institutional system to start building up a “smarter democracy”.

Abstract
Did politics, policies and political institutions play a role in the emergence and evolution of the contemporary long lasting systemic crisis Italy has been experiencing since 2008? This is the key question addressed. After arguing that the macrovariable “politics” has played and is still playing a crucial role in the genesis and persistence of the crisis, four possible innovative and unprecedented institutional adjustments are presented and discussed. In particular, the logic of these adjustments consists in reducing the weight of rhetoric, spectacularization, electoral promises, demagogy, populism, large scale free-riding, ineffectiveness of legislative bodies, unaccountability of policy makers to try to set up political institutional system to start building up a “smarter democracy”.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
