Gli obiettivi del percorso di ricerca erano evidenziare e identificare laddove possibile i gruppi settari giudeo-cristiani conosciuti alle fonti arabo-islamiche. In effetti, pochi sono stati i gruppi identificati con assoluta certezza perché le fonti selezionate hanno offerto spesso denominazioni fortemente alterate. Numerose le fonti utilizzate (greche, latine, siriache, ebraiche, bizantine, arabe e persiane) che diffondendosi, in alcuni casi, si sono scambiate reciproche informazioni.
