By comparing the Italian mystery TV series The Marble Faun with Nathaniel Hawthorne’s Italian romance, this essays shows how in this TV version Hawthorne’s original operation of cultural translation of Italy to America is somehow reversed, and what we finally have is what the Italian media culture of the 1970s perceived as America’s Romantic perception of Italy. Following the various somersaults this American Romantic image of Italy undergoes through its translation and transcodification back and forth across the ocean and one century of cultural history, the essay gives a new perspective not only on the last of Hawthorne’s completed romances, but also on the interplay of the reciprocal influences between the United States and Italy the book both conflated and triggered.
