Confini, viabilità e bonifica agraria del territorio di "Tifernum Mataurense"

The work collects and summarises the results of decades of studies, excavations and research into the ancient Tifernum Mataurense (modern day S. Angelo in Vado, in the province of Pesaro-Urbino), an Apennine municipium in the upper Metauro valley, bordering the surrounding territories of Tifernum Tiberinum (Città di Castello), Sestinum (Sestino), Pitinum Pisaurense (Macerata Feltria), Urvinum Mataurense (Urbino) and Pitinum Mergens (Acqualagna). The issue of reconstructing historical borders and ancient transport systems is addressed both from an historical point of view, retracing and comparing the civic and religious history of the Tifernum communities, and from an archaeological point of view, by means of accurate references to the urban topography of the city, the physical geography of the area (mountains, rivers etc.) and to the persistence of roadways and place-names. Scattered yet still evident traces of land cultivation and Roman centuriation survive, mainly in the lowland Tifernum areas, to the east and to the west of the city, along the course of the River Metauro and adjoining two road axes which run alongside the river bed on opposite banks.
