Based on the premise that terrorism/counter-terrorism is essentially a message, this paper examines it from the joint perspective of a corpus-based discursive analytical approach and the dynamic interaction between power and space. Through the extensive examination of the speeches by central figures in the international political scene, it explores the ways in which political communication shapes the international reaction to terrorism. Drawing on political discourse corpora, it illustrates how consent is manufactured using such strategies as legitimation, coercion and representation, and examines the role of global communication in combating terrorism.

Abstract

Based on the premise that terrorism/counter-terrorism is essentially a message, this paper examines it from the joint perspective of a corpus-based discursive analytical approach and the dynamic interaction between power and space. Through the extensive examination of the speeches by central figures in the international political scene, it explores the ways in which political communication shapes the international reaction to terrorism. Drawing on political discourse corpora, it illustrates how consent is manufactured using such strategies as legitimation, coercion and representation, and examines the role of global communication in combating terrorism.
