The analysis of the fragments of 1798 concerning the constitution of Württemberg reveals the decisive influence played by the debate on the reforms in the duchy, started with the distribution of war costs with France among the different social players. By claiming the prerogative of approving new taxes, the social classes are also promoting renovation projects; however, the Diet remains divided between the intention of limiting the dukes’ claims and the fears of a democratic drift. Abstract

An accurate reading of Hegel’s lines, crossed with an analysis of the catalogue of his library, reveals interesting textual consonances with contemporary pamphleteering. Due to the absence of new textual discoveries, the Hegelian hesitations and contradictions denounced by Haym appear, at the very least, interesting to reconstruct the context of uncertainty in which an entire generation of German Jacobins acts.
