This paper focuses on naval missions currently operating in the central Mediterranean Sea to combat smuggling and trafficking in the high sea off the coast of Libya and particularly on the EU military operation EUNAVFOR MED Sophia, which was established by the EU Council in 2015. The author analyses the legal basis of the operations and provides for the legal framework concerning primary rules binding both States and international organisations. Finally, the responsibility of States and international organisations for wrongful acts allegedly perpetrated in the course of these operations is assessed.
