Female conservatories were among the most important and significant educational and welfare institutions of the European women's educational history in the modern age. Created around the XVI century, to protect the honour of different categories of young people and women in situations of need and difficulty, the conservatoires were multiplied and specialized themselves in the XVII and XVIII centuries and, in many cases, continued their activities on their own in the XIX and the XX century, adjusting their educational goals to the new requirements of the time. A famous example, but poorly studied, of this particular type of institution is the Conservatory of the Holy Conception in Rome, called ‘Viperesche’. Created in 1668, this ancient institution underwent some significant changes in the post-unification period (after 1861), without betraying its ancient charitable and educational purposes. This paper intends to reconstruct, for the first time, and with the help of unpublished documents taken from the historical archives of the Conservatory, the history of this prestigious Roman institution, focusing on the innovations introduced in its educational-assistance program in the course of the late XIX century, during the Fascist period and after World War II.
