To Friedrich Nietzsche who, in the Genealogy of Morals, wrote that humility is the virtue of slaves, Max Scheler replied by the rehabilitation of all virtue and, therefore, of humility. However, why should this virtue be rehabilitated? The path that Jean-Louis Chrétien gave in his reading of Bernard de Clairvaux is quite different, because he aims to show, on the one hand, what humility manifests about man and, on the other side, what pride conceals. It is from this new reading of humility that this paper will aim at noticing the heuristic power and value of this one, what will be called “the intelligence of humility”.
