The authenticity of the last two chapters (11‐12) of the Epistle to Diognetus was questioned by the first editor and many others scholars, although the hypothesis which claims the unity of the text had a lot of supporters. Just at the beginning of chapter 11 we find a probable reminiscence of Isocrates’ Panegyric, a work which was largely appreciated in the age of Second Sophistic. This echo of classic Greek literature maybe shows the cultural affinity between the end of the Epistle to Diognetus and the preceding pages, so that the unity of the text appears more probable.

Abstract

The authenticity of the last two chapters (11‐12) of the Epistle to Diognetus was questioned by the first editor and many others scholars, although the hypothesis which claims the unity of the text had a lot of supporters. Just at the beginning of chapter 11 we find a probable reminiscence of Isocrates’ Panegyric, a work which was largely appreciated in the age of Second Sophistic. This echo of classic Greek literature maybe shows the cultural affinity between the end of the Epistle to Diognetus and the preceding pages, so that the unity of the text appears more probable.
