The paper presents some reflections on women in Anglo-Saxon society, moving from onomastics in Old English epic poetry. The typical conservativity of poetry, and its metrical fixness may contribute to reconstruct the identifying characteristics of the female figure in the archaic tradition, revealing costumes and roles of public and private and, with them, the underlying social conditions.

Abstract
The paper presents some reflections on women in Anglo-Saxon society, moving from onomastics in Old English epic poetry. The typical conservativity of poetry, and its metrical fixness may contribute to reconstruct the identifying characteristics of the female figure in the archaic tradition, revealing costumes and roles of public and private and, with them, the underlying social conditions.I documenti in IRIS sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
